RESTORATION

When I restore, I always keep the original intent of the frame or object in mind, and I believe that any good restoration begins with preserving as much of the original piece as possible. So I always begin by consolidating loose and worm-eaten areas; stabilising areas of flaking, particularly along cracks, chipped gesso, and loose corner joints. Then, I gently clean, only if and where it’s necessary, working “dry” or with water-based liquids.

Following any necessary work by a carver or cabinet maker, I replace gesso losses and match the original bole, before I begin re-gilding using traditional techniques and pure gold leaf.
